The Colorado Dog Magazine

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The Colorado Dog Magazine is the ultimate dog magazine in Colorado. Each issue is going to be packed with fabulous feature articles, weekend getaways, city destinations, night on the town, the dog ART scene, doggie DESIGN scene, doggie FASHION scene, doggie SOCIAL scene, doggie CUISINE scene, singles in the city, featured dog parks, dog parent families, social issues, nutrition and more. Keep in mind that we are a dog magazine, and our readers are very sophisticated in matters pertaining to dogs.

We accept unsolicited submissions and queries.

We review submissions in the intervals between magazine production. Therefore, it can take us up to a year to respond. Please do not contact us regarding the status of your submission. If we elect to publish it, we will notify you.

We are not responsible for unsolicited materials sent to us. In particular, do not send original photos/artwork/slides, or any other material that you would be disappointed to have lost or damaged in transit.

Specifics:

Manuscripts must be sent digitally to editor@thecoloradodog.com with the author's name, address, phone number and e-mail address on each page; it is very important to include word count on the top of the first page. A short bio would also be appreciated. If accepted, all material is subject to editing. Do note if this is a simultaneous submission.

If you are interested in freelancing, please send us a writing sample (ideally, that has been published) and let us know what subject matter interests you. A query should propose a story with a specific angle, not just a broad topic. Almost any topic is fair game, provided that it has a connection to life with dogs in Colorado.

When proposing a story, keep in mind that we generally assign stories at least 6 weeks prior to an issue's cover date. For this reason, when writing about events, we usually look forward to upcoming events rather than reviewing what has already occurred.

Along with the article itself, you should submit a list of your sources (including phone numbers) and notes from your interviews (including transcriptions of taped interviews). These will be used for fact-checking purposes.

Commentaries, essays, stories, fiction and well-researched non-fiction will be considered but all work must prominently include dogs.

Articles and stories should not exceed 1,000 words. Ideally an article should be no longer than 700 words, and will stand a better chance of publication if it is below this limit. We also accept short pieces (less than 400 words) on general tips, how-to articles and on other topics.

A journalistic approach is preferred. Memoirs are strongly discouraged. Often writers who are new to magazines think that they have been freed from the drudgery accurate reporting, and instead exercise their literary aspirations. Our articles are held to a high standard of accuracy. If submitting a non-fiction article, primary sources must be included or supplied for fact-checking. The Colorado Dog Magazine follows The Chicago Manual of Style.

Payment:

The Colorado Dog Magazine pays upon publication; compensation varies according to complexity and length of article and is individually negotiated.
